Meet David Sturge

My camera is a witness to the rugged beauty of Newfoundland and Labrador, a land I have served for a lifetime as a guide and guardian. Beyond the frame, I use my work to advance protection for the beings I am privileged to document. My perspective is forged in the North and dedicated to the vital cause of conservation.

Acknowledging the Land

As a wildlife photographer and conservationist deeply connected to the landscapes and seascapes of Newfoundland and Labrador. I respectfully acknowledge that the land and waters I explore and photograph are the traditional territories of the Mi’kmaq, Innu, and Inuit peoples. These Nations have maintained profound relationships with these places for thousands of years and continue to do so today as caretakers of the natural world.

The wildlife I encounter and photograph are not mine to own, but beings I am privileged to witness. Their presence is a gift, one that comes with responsibility. I approach every subject with deep respect, guided by ethical practices that honour the lives I document. My goal is simple: to share their beauty in a way that fosters connection, awareness, and protection, for them and the land they call home.

A Life of Stewardship + Conservation

Born in Labrador City, the wildness of the North has always been my compass. From the rugged southern cliffs to the remote northern reaches, my camera is a witness to a land I also serve as a Sea Captain, Park Ranger, and Wildlife Guide.

My work is an act of stewardship. As a member of the CCPC and a Property Steward for the Nature Conservancy of Canada, I use my lens to advance protection for the beings I am privileged to document. I don’t just take photos; I carry a responsibility to honour the lives and landscapes that define my home.
